Benefit of working from home # 27*

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????It’s Frivolous Friday…but I don’t really consider today’s topic to be frivolous…as it involves happiness!

One of the benefits of working for yourself and working from home is having the ability to change your plans for the day (of course when time permits)…and this is exactly what happened to me yesterday…

As usual I had a list of the work I wanted to accomplish for the day (I love lists, but that’s a topic for another time), as well as where I needed to be and when…but then I received an offer for a “cake date” with a three year old (and his gorgeous Mum)…how could I resist?

It got me thinking that it wasn’t too long ago that I would have had to turn this offer down, and while it means I’ll need to do some catch up work on the weekend…I’m glad I had the opportunity to spend time with them (the smiles of this three year old definitely warm my heart).

The end of the financial year is always hectic for Accountants, as it is for many others…but I urge you all to take time out for your loved ones whenever you can… take in the happy times…because happiness is golden.

Regards

Indeed, working from home provides wonderful flexibility to ‘seize the moment’. There are different challenges associated with being outside of a formal workplace, but on the flip side is that capacity to readily alter priorities – the freedom to rework the roster, take time out, put time back in (sort of!), rescue the washing when it rains……

Having read your comments, Bron, I’m reminded of two special things. My mother always quoted an elderly neighbor, who said it was ‘worth ten quid a week to be your own boss’. That saying dates back to just after the second world war, obviously before decimal currency arrived, but it resonates for me. Mum would also point out that ten quid was ‘a lot of money’ in those days. The second memory you have stirred is of a ridiculously over-sized key ring that I had in my university days. Its slogan was ‘Don’t worry, don’t hurry, don’t forget to smell the flowers’. At a time when I was away from all that was familiar to me, tackling a brave new world, that key ring was my reminder to stay calm and appreciate the little things along the way. I might add that to this day, if I can stop and smell a flower (usually roses) for a second or two, then I do! Just last week, my ‘time out’ opportunity included a day with Henry, my gorgeous grandson, and burying my nose in a fragrant rose that peeped over a fence as we were taking an afternoon stroll in suburban Melbourne.

While there may be financial implications when setting up a ‘working from home’ situation, many of the benefits can be quantified in different, much more exciting ways, such as ‘cake date’ sessions with a three year old! Celebrate life, don’t just live it.
